Chicory Suite

Chicory Hermaphrodite

at 7 in the evening
he’s the weediest looking tramp
that ever stood beside a road

at 7 in the morning
she’s a young man’s dream
of the phantom hitchhiker

* * *

July Beside the Supermarket

the vacant lot that blossomed
trash all spring
is littered with chicory

* * *

In the Anti-Universe

roads stop short
get squeezed
between broad patches
of yrocihC
moondala plant
with crooked flowers

* * *

Country Preacher

At The Church of Entrepreneurial Grace
a contract guarantees no weeds!

Give me that Old Time Religion:
total emersion
in chicory

* * *

On the Lawn

they scandalize my name

this free-thinking Eros
this free-loving Psyche

* * *

diving

Lake
Blue
Field

water
so
clear
it
has
no
bottom

* * *

Survivors

standing
skeletons
living
ghosts

eyes
of
those
ragged
women
at
the
wire

* * *

On Closer Look

in the center of a morning sky
we see a tiny ring of stars:
the crystal voice of Saraswati
calling Brahma to his prayers

* * *

Heisenberg’s Delight

in chicory
fails locality

* * *

Nestling

when I am
this blue

my left palm
hefts the simple
trust of your head
again. Ah, you
who had my hair
her eyes. when I
am your nest

again, you are
this blue

and that

* * *

Song

a love
so blue

a blues
like chicory

* * *

Wild Coda for the Doc’s Bouquet

all along the roadside, Queen Anne
is lifting her laces as high as she can
