The (Local) Fight Begins

January 10, 2017

Terrific meeting of the Democratic “Fighting 37th” (WA state legislative district) last night at the Ethiopian Community Center. It was my first meeting (besides the holiday party). It was the annual organizing meeting, with election of officers etc. I feared that I’d find a bunch of sedentary local establishment types, but hoped for a fired up crowd of progressives. Got the progressives!

We were 120 or so souls, and we were as diverse as the population of this zip code, which is one of the most diverse in the country. The persons whom we elected to lead, and to represent us at the city, county, and state level, are equally diverse. And they all seemed to be dedicated, energetic, capable, and pissed. I enjoyed seeing democracy in action.

We also heard a report by our new state senator, who had just experienced her first day in the legislature. She was tired but still smiling, in spite of disheartening actions by her Republican colleagues, who, as she described them, spent the day joking, laughing, not paying attention, and introducing bills that would be detrimental to our community.

Our previous state senator, Pramila Jayapal, is now a Progressive member of the U. S. House of Representatives.

Fight Locally!
