Hillary Gets It

August 7, 2016

This deserves a page of its own, right here.

HC: “We have to recognize that, of course, some of the appeal [of Trump] is xenophobic, racist, misogynistic,” Clinton said, while cautioning the audience not to “lose sight of the pain that many Americans are feeling because the economy has left them behind.”

She said that to an audience of Black and Hispanic journalists. Here’s the article in which she is quoted. Here’s the youtube.

On the other hand, here’s a critique, listing many very important issues that she did not address, and was not asked to address.

But here she was talking about Trump and his voters and potential voters, and, I hope, signaling something very basic about her vision of people, and of what she must do about our economy, for almost everyone’s sakes.

If I’m understanding her correctly (and maybe I’m just feeling better and thinking wishfully), this is bigger than just saying the right thing to get white working class votes that she needs, it’s a signal that she perceives the desperation of these persons and families, and she cares about them.

She’s not as down-to-earth with our sisters and brothers as Bernie is, but we just need her to understand and to do the right thing by everybody.

PS: as I was about to post this, I came across my notes on Hillary’s acceptance speech, which seemed to me at the time to be an “American aspirational” speech. Glancing over my running notation of her points, I see more clearly that her message was compassionately inclusive. She spoke, for instance, of people who have been “made to feel that their lives are disposable.”

(Now, can she give them a powerful, Democratic voice?  Can her supporters allow her to do it?)
