For Our Victims and Executioners

July 11, 2016

“the quality of mercy is not strained”

the quality of our breathing

together

opening our bodies

Camus, coming out of the resistance against nazi occupation, contemplated a life in which one strives to be neither victim nor executioner. It’s an inspiring and demanding insight.

But as we resist being spiritually occupied by a culture of gun violence, epitomized by our terrified and terrifying police, I’m thinking that we need to both hold to that thought, and affirm awareness that we are all, all of us, both victims and executioners.

Life is doubly complicated at times like these, and at the same time being is one, humanity is one.

Compassion and justice require it of us.

breathing peacefully, peacefully breathing

open bodies, opening

into being / together
