Disorder in the House!

June 23, 2016

I just want to mention, as the Dems in the House, joined by Senators including Bernie, end their sit-in and address interested reporters outside the Capital Bldg, with the imprimatur of minority Leader Pelosi, impassioned remarks by Congressman Lewis, and the singing of “We Shall Overcome,” that Dems have turned gun control into a civil rights issue on behalf of an aggrieved nation.

But more: this was an act of civil disobedience. It’s important to get that. Furthermore, it was no more a “political stunt” (as Speaker Ryan called it) than was the March on Washington for jobs and the vote. Let’s hope that it turns out to be the peaceable spear point of a thrust to achieve action on many issues, a trumpet in the halls of Congress that will shake the Republican walls.

This sit-in was an assembly for redress of grievances that took a form of orderly dis-order that business people and the super rich abhor. It directly challenged their continued ownership and management of civil society through their agent, the Republican Party.  We found out with the Civil Rights movement in the U S and with the May ’68 movement in France, and again with the suppression of the Occupy movement, how much the wealthy prefer stability, in the form of an imbalanced economic and political order that is tilted in their favor.

It is difficult for folks who accumulate money by manipulating the body politic to practice their treachery when society is fluctuating, people are awake to what is being done to them, and people are taking organized action to change the balance of power.

As the old saying goes, “You don’t mess with the hornets, ‘cause dey’s auganized.” *

John Lewis, Nancy Pelosi, and a group of Dems have taken the Political Revolution into Congress. Let’s push them to keep it there, while we push everywhere we can. I think a sustained effort of direct action can achieve excellent results. We can also say with John Lewis and millions who came before him that “it is time and past time, to make a way out of no way.”

But the Republicans cannot tolerate this kind and degree of disorderliness. They will do everything that they can think of to blunt it, including the use of Drumpf to create a backlash.

We are up against the enormous power of organized money, wielded by persons who have no scruples when it comes to defending their interests.
