Bernie as Grouchy Old Folk

March 7, 2016

The young dream dreams, the mid-aged see visions, and people who are almost as old as I am grow impatient. We get grouchy because we’ve seen entirely too much foolish obstruction of what is good for people, we know that life doesn’t have to be that way, and we want people to just stop that. What a waste of time it is.

We don’t have a lot of time ahead of us. As we prepare to make our Great Change, we want to see big changes that will improve life for those who follow.

So it’s not surprising if sometimes we become irritable. Perhaps a bit short of temper.

I got those insights from a very helpful book on old age, The Force of Character, written by James Hillman when he was Bernie’s age.

Bernie reminds me of the elderly woman at the tiny Obama meeting in 2008 who was “fired up” and “ready to go.” In-yr-face impatience is something important that we old folks offer to civil society.

I’m guessing that Hillary will offer it too.  It’s just a matter of time.
