“Fire!” in a Crowded Theatre

August 25, 2015

It turns out that it IS okay to shout “Fire!” in a crowded theatre. Politicians (and he is a politician) like Donald Trump are free to do it—even when some members of the audience are convinced that they’ve been smelling smoke, everywhere.

It’s called “hate speech.”

I want to recommend an excellent article on Trump, and his audience, in the Aug 31 issue of The New Yorker: “The Fearful and the Frustrated,” by Evan Osnos.

I’ve just now read it online (subscription), and I don’t want to repeat its content until the issue has been “on the newsstands” for a while. Then I’m likely to think out loud about it.
