Diary 8-11-15

August 11, 2015

Dear Diary – Drought is really impressive.  I’m naturally inclined to think that it will rain again, some time, in Seattle. But then again, why should I think that? It’s predicted, but it doesn’t materialize. And enough to help? Our ground water must be seriously depleted. The plant life certainly acts like it. Many of the blue Italian plums are falling from the tree before getting plump.  And the top soil is more like wood chips, in some places, or unglazed ceramic tile in others. Even the undomesticated, native, flowering plants, with their very long roots, are having trouble. (I.e. weeds, of course.)  Well, it did rain a bit, just a couple weeks ago, but already it feels like it never will again. And we didn’t see snow in the city last winter, or much in the mountains. Ergo, not enough moisture in the ground. My garden is on life support. But there’s a limit to how much we should do of that. I might have to pull the hose.
