Republican Rearview Drivers

June 30, 2015

This phenomenon is important in itself, but I had to add it to the narrative also for a moment of cringeful laughter at myself.  From an article by pollster, Charlie Cook:

“Simply put, Republicans are loaded up in a car, racing toward a generational cliff with their eyes focused on the rearview mirror, with many (but notably not all) oblivious to the societal changes taking place all around them and the growing wedge building between their comfort zone and presidential swing voters.”

As I approached 16, my dad drove us out to a country road to start teaching me how to drive.  I got into the driver’s seat, took a while to get used to the clutch, then found myself moving slowly but smoothly on a straight, gravel road, with no traffic.  I soon noticed, and became fascinated by, the fact that I could keep the car aligned straight ahead, looking only in the rearview mirror.  Of course my dad, looking ahead, could see that we were approaching a turn in the road.

I wonder, too, if the Republican politicians aren’t admiring themselves in that mirror.
